GREENVILLE, SC

We figure it is about 8 hours to Greenville because I play in the Chapel Hill area a lot and that haul is just 5 hours... so the dude and I rack and pack and get some coffee and we are on the road by 1:30am... with gear coffee and OK, we're a bit jammed and beat but what the hell, the road calls and we are off... Hit Richmond around 3:30 and when we hit Petersburgh we take 85 south... that should put us all the way into Atlanta... so we nod off and finally pull over after Chapel Hill and catch a few Z's in the Waffle House parking lot, something we have grown very adept at. The other road skill we both have down is sleep in the car seats and feeling good in the morning... it's a trick but it's all about the way the windshield is set and the size of the dash.

WINDOW DRESSING

Around 4:45am, south of Chapel Hill, I see an amazing sky that just sort of opens up on the right horizon... it's still dark so we turn the headlights off, cruisin' along at 75mph in awe of the skyward disply of celestial mechanics appearing on the right horizon... a touch of heaven, it gives thrills that shudder thru the car... it's a series of layers, one on top of the other, of perfectly seated blacks, greys and reflex blues with a shot of pale grey stuck in here and there and it just moves along the horizon close enough to touch, scrapping above the pine forest and the tall evergreens that sit in the perfectly coiffed and hoed and furrowed rows on either side of the road... and as we watch, the entire skyscape changes as a drizzle overtakes the cloud bank and streaks through the now turned back on headlights...
