INTO THE LOOP

... coming into chicago on 80/90 west and it is already dark... the skyline stares at you and the sears tower is so perfect; it looks like all the other buildings are huddled around it in some skyline ritual performed nightly for a few fortunate souls...

Chicago has real, true history and it's just so cool to look at and drive around in... every street goes somewhere and i pull off the dan ryan expressway and drive around the rush and division street area and think about a 1949 novel set in this 3 block jungle; "the man with the golden arm"... I expect to see frankie, sparrow and recordhead bendar standing in any one of the alley doors... the cover of the novel was designed by saul bass and is a true graphic masterpiece... the movie version had frank sinatra...

CHICAGO BOUND

Thru Chicagoland and heading north to great Milwaukee and then across to Eau Claire... by 10pm I am pulling into Milwaukee... 10 hours straight drive and a quick spin around chicago...then barrel north on 94 to the beer capital of the world... it's thursday night and although I don't have anything going on, I know I need to hit the stage at The Bremen Cafe which is right around the corner from the Art Bar where I am booked on friday night... I am already getting my road skin back... a bit of shadow, the rayban factor, the disheveled hair... sort of a "hi, jon mcelroy, lead guitar, drivin' the winnebago" sort of look designed to foster conversation unless it's a room of mutes... it works wonders... and the toll booth marketing strategy is in full force...
