| Leaving Cleveland, it's west to chicago where I will be later in the month, and I have a day to get to Cafe 318 in Excelsior, MN... as I was changing lanes on 80 West, I looked out across the concrete at a huge, monsterous building that was so big it seemed oddly close... I took a weed choked road to the building, but the gates were so rusted and so corroded that they wouldn't open and as I was leaving the road the sky had gotten suddenly much darker and there was a bright blazing light coming from the end of the building by the exit ramp... so I pulled into this small doorway that opened into a vast space with bright lights everywhere and not a soul around... it was absolutely empty... |

| ...but way down at the far end were three guys working on one huge, gigantic piece of green steel... a brand new, freshly shrink-wrapped and so naked locomotive engine the length of three cars end to end. I loved the scale of it all... this is big you can touch! They were like small gnomes, working away in the center of this vast and rusted out industrial job shop... and then the main guy came over and asked me to either help them of get out... I stayed a little bit longer, walked down the other side of the building towards the exit and when I got halfway, I took this photo looking back over my shoulder... |
