LACKAWANA, NY

... something very odd about this gas station and I just can't put my finger on it... it's open for business, the lights in the bays are blazing... but there are no cars in them that I could see.

But lookat the building it's perfectly angular, so elegantly squared off... no fenistration, no rocco ornamental highlights, just a clean, functional box building that didn't try to be anything else.

Look at all the cracks in the concrete in the front... grass growing out of every crack, enough to warrant a hand mower... it was just so striking, and the sky was overcast, the building was grey and the lights in the bays blazed like a baptist window...

TRAVEL FUN

I took my screwdrivers - the small set - with me again and when I had to stay in a motel, I always unscrewed the Dick Van Patton art off the walls, and placed one of my own posters - nicely centered - back in the frame.

Then I put them back on the walls... I did this many times a few tours before and then it all came rushing back to me on 80W.

I pulled over just this side of South Bend IN and stumbled into the cheapest Comfort Inn room they had; I fell onto the bed, got the remote and looked directly into the mirror on the shelf reflecting the two pictures that were screwed to the wall above the bed...

My posters.
